How hair affects our psychology

People tend to view hair as their crowning glory. Hair and hairstyles can be seen as important cultural artifacts as they are simultaneously public, personal, and highly malleable to suit cultural and personal preferences. Hair has significant power as it reflects a person’s identity. Throughout history, hair has played a significant role in society, and it has been associated with youthfulness and beauty in women and virility and masculinity in men. It is clear that hair on several occasions can affect our psychology and self-esteem.

A good or bad hair day, as superficial as it may sound, can in fact have an impact on one’s confidence. Research has shown that a person experiencing a bad hair day may notice changes in their self-consciousness and perception of attractiveness and feel less smart, incapable, unsociable, and even embarrassed (we don’t say it, Yale does!). In general, a bad hair day can equate to a bad day. When a person's hair is too fine, too frizzy, too dry, turning grey, or falling out, it can greatly affect their self-esteem. A good hair day, on the other hand, can make a person feel like they could take over the world. The deep personal connection between hair and self-esteem can be seen across continents, cultures, religions, and history. From tokens of affection to sources of strength, hair has symbolized many things over time.

As said before, hair can reflect someone’s identity. A new hairstyle can instantly change how a person feels and how they are perceived by the world. Even the slightest color change can make a big difference. Haircuts, hairstyles, and hair colors express different things about a person and can alter the way they feel about themselves. Even a minor change in our hair can give a major boost to our self-esteem and become an act of empowerment and self-love.

Moreover, hair can be a symbol of liberation. When someone is going through a major life event, this could be the catalyst for a dramatic hair change. Other than self-consciousness indications, hair also reflects the constant changes we see in ourselves through the years. When going through a major change, changing your hair, like cutting off your long flowing hair into a short pixie cut, or vice versa, choosing hair extensions to accomplish a long hair look, is a small, but powerful way to assert control and alter how the world sees you.
